Go Skiing in Zakopane!

First off, how's the sound of the town?
There's hardly a better ski town than Zakopane. When it comes to the sights, sounds, smells, sips and slopes, this baby is right up there with the best of them! Nestled in the heart of the Tatra Mountains - the peak of the Carpathians, a northeastern offshoot of the Alps - Zakopane keeps its visitors happy; and they keep coming back. Perhaps the fact that the Tatra Mountains are the youngest alpine mountain chain in the world has something to do with the energy around here? I don't know. But between the vast vistas, hot hotels, and bruising bars, you'll find something for everyone in Zakopane.

I like the cut of your jib. What's the scope of the slope?
Yeah, that's cheesy, sorry; but seriously, the skiing around here is good. The surrounding environs are in pristine shape - the natural result of environmental protection efforts. At present, you'll find about 50 ski lifts around here; and this number is constantly growing due to the exploding popularity of the region. Here are some hot spots:

At the top of the list is Kasprowy Wierch. You can reach this summit by the cable car from Kuznice. However, be advised: this peak is very popular. Add to that an archaic cable car (built in the 1930's!!) and bureaucratic restrictions on its development and you've got a line (queue, for you English blokes) that can take hours to negotiate. The best advice is to reserve your cable car ticket in advance at a travel agency. If you can't do it remotely, you certainly can purchase one ahead of time, in Zakopane. Either way, it's worth the wait: Once you get to the top you'll enjoy a loooong ride down. The slope is fairly challenging, so novice skiers should go at their own risk. Good skiing conditions can hold until May

Nosal is another top choice around here. With a chair-lift and over 10 T lifts, you won't be bored. On a clear day the views are fantastic.

Next up is Gubalowka, which provides the closest slopes to the town. You can reach the top via the newly built railcar or one of many T-bar style lifts. In addition to a fantastic view of Zakopane and its surrounding environs, you'll find slopes for all levels of skiers. Artificial snow and lighting keep the place humming for a long while.

As with many places in Poland, the best stuff is reserved for the adventurous and those willing to do some exploring. So if you're willing to give up McDonald's and souvenirs, try visiting some of the local villages. The prices will be a lot lower and the feel much more authentic. Besides you can feel cool for getting off the beaten path. Some good slopes can be found in Bialka, Poronin or Bukowina Tatrzanska. Bust out a map and away you go!

For those of you who prefer the horizontal to the vertical, Zakopane is a cross-country skiers dream. Try the Krokiew area by the massive ski jumps (Malysz in the house!). Once again, if at all possible, try to find some less travelled routes; the peace and quiet will make those breathtaking views all the more enjoyable.

Dude, I forgot my gear!
No worries. There are plenty of places to rent equipment around here (just follow the link and choose 'Ski Hire'). Furthermore, unlike the neighbours to the west, Poland can still boast affordability. You can get some really good gear for a fraction of what you'd pay in the U.S. or Switzerland. With all the money you save, you can enjoy Zakopane's nightlife even more!

How affordable is "affordable?" Well here are some general prices to get you rolling. (And, by the way, $1 = app. 3 PLN, €1 = app. 4 PLN, £1 = app. 5.8 PLN)

Ski Rental - All Day for 30 - 40 PLN

Ski Passes at:

Nosal - 15 rides for 50 PLN

Gubalowka - 10 rides for 50 PLN

Szymoszkowa - 10 rides for 60 PLN

Kasprowy - 1 ride for approx. 10 PLN

If there is anything else you'd like to see on this page, tell us. Meanwhile if you can't ski to save your life then book some skiing lessons through us, and you'll be slaloming in no time!

Alright! Kick some slope-bootie!

Hello, about ski lessons you may start the first day by 3 hours and ask the instructor if she/he recommends the same for next days or not.
We may recommend you the following instructors/ski school(english speaking) operating in Bukowina whose internet links are: http://www.instruktornarciarstwa.com.pl/pricelist.html
http://www.rusin-ski.pl/szkola-narciarska.html .Their email address is on "KONTAKT".You may also get in touch with ski@zakopane-life.com to ask if they can give lessons there.
About booking ski lessosn, you should ask them by email if it is needed or not and if there is also deposit to prepay.About equipment rental, it should not be any problem to find on site good equipment for everybody.Ski rental shops are mainly located at the base of the slopes/pistes.We wish you nice time in Bukowina ski resorts and Spa complex. And if you have some time and willing, why not coming to Zakopane for visiting, skiing...it is a more vibrant, folkl;oric city than Bukowina on my opinion. There are often bus routes between both cities.Hope my answer helps.

Hi, we are coming to Bukowina in a few weeks (1 adult and 3 kids are complete beginners, the other 3 adults are intermediate level) and we would like to have ski lessons whilst there. I was thinking maybe 3 hrs each day for first 3 days for the beginners, and 3 hours on first day for the intermediate. Or do you advise something else?

Do we need to book in advance? If so, can you recommend any ski schools there?

And what about ski hire in Bukowina? Will skis/boots/poles be available if we turn up on our first day or should we book in advance?

Thanks a lot for your help. I am SO excited about coming skiing there.

Hello, as ski resorts in Zakopane are not near each other even if not too far(max.5 km), the best to get from one resort to an other one is by bus(by checking the direction board available in front windscreen), or by taxi(more expensive but easier to get right to the slopes not nearby),or you may rent a car (from 80 PLN/day for a car for 5 pers. max.).Also, you may by walk, but a lot longer or by horse sleighs(lot more expensive);-) For resorts out of Zakopane(in Poland or Slovakia nearby)(from 10 to 50 km away), there are buses running often. Hi Yvonne - kids can start skiing at an early age, some even from 3/3.5-4 yrs.
Ski schools will have different requirements as to minimum ages - but have you considered a private lesson? This will particularly be beneficial to your younger skier as they will have one-on-one instruction from the watchful eye of the instructor. Don't hesitate to contact us for more information at ski@zakopane-life.com

About where you start skiing, it is certainly "Szymoszkowa", very famous slopes of Zakopane, opened fully and very good ski conditions as they are working a lot on the snow and also using some chemicals to keep the snow even if the temmperature reach +12 degres celsius.1 slopes of Kasprowy is opened, the other ones should open very soon (www.pkl.pl).Hope it helps.Ogrodygorskie of Zakopane

Hello Ninel, you are right:for backpackers and young looking for basic room with basic amenities, that place is good with breakfast and closed to ski slopes , and at very affordable price(may be not 10 euros per night with breakfast in peak season time fare??).
But for better standard, with fully furnished apartment(kitchen, bathroom, living room) with TV Sat, WiFi internet)closed to ski slopes, restaurants and food shops, still at very affordable price for the very good standard of apartment, i would suggest the apartments from www.apart-center.pl .

To all young people who are looking for a cheap yet nice and well-located accomodation in Zakopane.

Las year when I went there for snowboarding, I came across a place called "Good Bye Lenin Hostel" and it appeared to be bull's eye.
It's a cosy yet clean and comfortable wooden house located just 800m from Nosal. It's filled with backpackers from around the world, so the atmosphere is great! They have friendly and helpful English-speaking staff and the prices start form 10 Euro per night (with breakfast included)
They even have their own ski and snowboard rental! I would definitely recommend the place.

Ok, let me set the record straight. Zakopane is a great all round winter destination but if you want to ski/board like you would in say France/Switzerland then you'll be slightly disappointed. There are several different hills you ca ski on but they are not connected with lifts. You'll usually get one chair and a couple t bars on each hill and thats about it. There are very cheap busses that connect each mountain with Zakopane so if you get bored with one then just jump on a bus to another, it won't take long. The exception is Kasprowy Wierch, which is well worth it. I've been told that the old cable car has been replaced with a new one but the queues are still long. Once you get to the top you can drop off either side of the mountain, one of which has a chair to get you back up without going all the way down to the car. You can just do the mega long run to the bottom at the end of your day. Really good views and if you're after something differetnt than the usual in France etc, then you'll love Zakopane. It's very back-to-basics as far as lifts and variety are concerned but thats what makes this place worth it. Also, do NOT get the train from Krakow, it takes ages, get the bus instead (the bus station is right next to Krwkow train station). This will be the cheapest skiing holiday you will ever go on - Guaranteed. As for hotels, the hotel Orbis on the main mall in town is the Shizzle!! cheap and very good food. And if you indulge in vodka (as you should) you can board down the main pedestrian street late at night!! Enjoy!!!

Hello Ania, Zakopane is a beautiful city specially in winter time when the snow is there. There are not really some parts better where to stay unless you have really some strict specification(city center(next to most shops but noisy), suburb(beautiful view, quiet).Slopes are a bit everywhere in Zakopoane and in cities nearby. But anyway it is easily and cheaply accessible by bus (or less cheap by taxi).Zakopane cannot be compared to slopes of Alpes mountains. Because most of Zakopane slopes (not Kasprowy slopes)are quiet short and for (and other slopes of resorts nearby have medium and shorts slopes). Also most of slopes are suitable to people with beginner and medium ski level(medium level -advanced for Kasprowy Wierch slopes). However, you may have some nice fun by skiing in a different place everyday , then you may go to spa, outdoor/indoor swimming pool , sauna/jacuzzi , massage, visit caves, doing some nordic walking, some walk with snowshoe, have some sightseeing... raquetscan. Hope my answer helps

Just come back from 3 nights in Zakopane. Great snow and enough slopes to keep you going for 3 or 4 days as an intermediate/advance skiier/boarder. Not sure if I would spend a week there though, unless learning then i would imagine it to be really good place to stay longer.

Kasprowy Wierch was great and for some reason no queues as others seem to experience! Scymozykova seems to the best 'resort' for ski hire (£12 per day) and has a nice red and blue run with cafe/bars on top (£1.50 - £2 a pint) and at the bottom with a roaring fire. Harenda, 2 miles out of town has one chair lift and a drag - essentially one big slope divided as blue, red and black runs. Fine for a morning but then time to move on. Didnt manage to make it to Nosal unfrotunately but meant to be decent.

People generally friendly but sign posts etc could be improved as took little while to work things out with the resorts scattered around.

but why is there on top of this page a picture from solisko / strbske pleso, which is a ski resort in the slovakian part of high tatras ??
zakopane is on the food of the mountain, i'm not sure how can it be the heart of the "the heart of the Tatra Mountains".
just one more comment to the author of this web page - i wanted to check out the options for skiing in zakopane, because i'd love to know also the polish part of the tatras. unfortunately this page doesn't contain any useful information for my trip. it's only full of trompery like in the historic part of the page. there were never hungarians living in the tatras area. the ottomans have never reached the tatras, because they were stopped in southern slovakia.

sorry, i have to have a look for some more professional page about zakopane.
