Paulina Ligocka of Poland snatched the gold medal in the women's snowboard halfpipe event at the 2005 Winter Universiade in Innsbruck this Wednesday.

Ligocka collected the highest score of 34.6 points for her victory, followed by Pan Lei of China in 32.2.

This is the first time that Chinese skiers took part in the international competition and won a medal as well.

"I am so excited just taking part in the competition," said Pan."I never dreamed that I could get a medal."

"I have only practiced the halfpipe for less than one year and never took part in international competition before," said 18-year-old Pan.

Saana Pehkonen from Finland took the bronze medal with 28.1.
