Poland Gears Up For Elections

Polish parliament Speaker Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz said Tuesday he would seek a vote to dissolve parliament May 5 leading to general elections June 19.

Poland has been locked in political turmoil since Leszek Miller was forced to step down as prime minister May 2, just one day after Poland joined the European Union.

After a protracted period of uncertainty, Miller was replaced by Marek Belka who put together an unsteady, center-left minority government.

Elections before the middle of 2005 had been widely expected by political analysts who say center-right parties should be able to garner enough votes to form a stable, majority government.

The analysts say Belka is unlikely to try and prevent early elections since such opposition is unlikely to be successful.
