Poland's greatest female tennis star since the pre-war era is gearing up for a fight at this year's Wimbledon. 20-year-old Agnieszka Radwanska, from Krakow, is seeded eleventh for the British tournament, which gets underway on Monday, 22nd June.
Radwanska made the quarter-finals last year, but was knocked out by U.S champion Serena Williams, who was beaten in the final by her own sister, Venus.
Like the Williams', Radwanska also likes to keep things in the family. Her doubles partner of many years is her own younger sister Ula, who is being tipped as a future star herself. The younger sister is already a winner of the Wimbledon Girls Singles (2007), and as a doubles team, the sisters have made it as far as the quarter finals of the French Open.
The last Polish lady to win acclaim on the tennis circuit was another Cracovian, Jadwiga Jedrzejowska, who made it to the final of Wimbledon in 1937, narrowly missing the trophy in a nail-biting match against British ace Dorothy Round (6-2, 2-6, 7-5).
