Zakopane Airport On The Horizon

Plans have been rubber-stamped for an airport in Poland's Highlands. The 200 million zloty project is focused just twenty kilometres from Zakopane centre at the regional capital of Nowy Targ.

At present most foreign travellers to Zakopane are obliged to fly to Cracow, which is over two hours car-drive away. The proposed development will help sports aficionados get straight to the action.

The first phase of the project will be to create a 1600 metre runway. Authorities are aiming at handling forty to fifty passenger planes a day.

There is no fixed date for the project's completion, but mayor of Nowy Targ, Marek Fryzlewicz, belives the airport could be up and running within three to five years.

As a visitor to Zakopane this season, the current public sevice from Krocaw is very efficent. and 2 hours to a resort is not a major problem!!!! but an airport at Newy would only benifit if the buget airlines get in.

This is a joke! They've been talking about an airport for years. To be honest, infrastructure projects take so long to organise, tenders are always shrouded in corruption, building work is slow - and at the end of the day the airport wouldn't be that close to Zakopane because it is right in the mountains! I think they should just work on improving rail and road connections from Krakow Airport
