IX Tatra Wici

The Wici is an annual extravaganza that sees loads of lively events, providing non-stop entertainment for lovers of the highlands. It all kicks off on 3rd July, with a colourful procession through the streets of Zakopane. Expect vibrant costumes, exuberant music and probably a hint of alcohol too. Look out for jolly japes such as the Day of the Trout (25th July), the election of the Ceper of the Year (Honorary Highlander, see below) on 31st June, and a Festival of Oscypek Cheese (8th August).

33rd Days of the Music of Karol Szymanowski

Exact dates are still pending, but this late July tribute looks set to be one of the most rewarding musical events of the year. Karol Szymanowski (1882-1937), long celebrated in Poland, is now firmly established as one of the most outstanding composers of the 20th century. He was deeply inspired by the Polish mountains, and he ended up settling in Zakopane in 1930. This series of concerts by virtuosos from Poland as well as international guests, will be performed in the Villa Atma, the composer's former home.

III Summer of Theatre in Zakopane

Before the war, Zakopane was a playground for artists of the first calibre, be they painters, musicians or actors. One of Poland's most avant-garde theatre groups was at large here, spear-headed by the legendary Witkacy. The Summer of Theatre seeks to continue that tradition, and in July and August, luvvies will be livening up main drag Krupowki Street with some spirited dramatic shenanigans. It's all great fun, and you can catch the action on the dates listed below.

10th Day of the Trout

The Day of the Trout returns in this celebration of all things fishy. Besides awards for feats in the world of fishing, there will also be gongs for gastronomic wizardry (it's time to dig out that recipe for trout ratatouille if you're feeling in a competitive mood). Accompanying all the fishy goings on will be a range of concerts by local folk groups. The action usually takes place on the sports field at the village of Bialy Dunajec. Election of the Ceper of the Year

A Ceper is simply any one of us curious folks who wasn't brought up in the highlands. Locals will occasionally concede that we are capable of some rudimentary tasks in life. And once a year a contest is held, setting highland aficionados a string of challenges. Strapping chaps will have to demonstrate their skills in many fields, including horse-riding, axe-chopping and more. The winner will be declared 'Ceper of the Year,' and to all intents and purposes, become an honorary highlander.
