Wigilia - Christmas

The Christmas period is one of the most evocative times of year in Poland. The focus today is the 'Wigilia' dinner, which normally begins when the first star appears in the sky. Twelve courses are served, mirroring the number of apostles. Meat is not served. Before things begin, Poles break the 'oplatek' - the holy wafer. Prayers are said and thoughts turm to those family members who are not present. At midnight - and well stuffed - families head to churches for 'Pasterka' (Midnight Mass). Naturally, here in Zakopane everyone will be decked out in colourful folk costume, lending an extra dose of magic to it all.

Music Shock Before New Year's Eve

Have a taste of what Zakopane is offering you on New Year's Eve before you make your final choice. Ampstrong is letting you get your feet wet before the big night. Sylwester - New Year's Eve Party

New Year's Eve is traditionally one of the biggest nights of the year in Zakopane, as it is across Poland. The whole town will be buzzing today, and this being Polska, you can expect the toasts to begin well before dusk falls. If you're dining out in town, try and reserve your table well in advance. Many restaurants will be hosting specially-themed banquets, and competition for tables will be fierce. The revelry will continue well into the white hours, with nightclubs such as Ampstrong hosting packed out parties. Of course, even if the temperatures are pushing -30, expect the Highlanders to come out in force. Antarctic temperatures are nothing for the locals - they'll be celebrating on the streets even if they're knee deep in snow and hordes of yetis come bowling into town. Around midnight fireworks will illuminate the night sky. Enjoy!

Ampstrong New Year's Eve Party

Zakopane's clubbing mecca is laying on a killer night of beats and breaks tonight. Some top notch international guests will be bringing in the new year, with backup from first class homegrown Djs. Leading the live assault will be Detroit based DJ and producer Activator, who has worked his magic on such combos as the International DJ Gigolos. He'll be joined by Polish star Jacek Sienkiewicz, who has won admirers across Europe. Finally, Ampstrong has lined up German turntable ace J-Bounce, famous for his bombastic blend of classical and electronic sounds. All in all a night to remember.
