| ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS All Souls echoes an ancient Slavic tradition that was once practised at this time of year -'Dziady' (Forefathers). It was a communion with departed souls, later enshrined by national bard Adam Mickiewicz in his Romantic play of the same name. Graveyards across the country will flicker with thousands of candles and travellers driving through the countryside will be confronted by seas of light. Here in Zakopane, the most beautiful place to head for is the folkloric Cmentarz na Peksowym Brzyzku (Cemetery by Peksa's Brook). Find it by the old wooden church of St. Clements at ul. Koscieliska. when - 1st & 2nd November where - Across Poland more info - click here |

| INDEPENDENCE DAY Poland may be amongst the oldest countries in Europe. But in the late 18th Century it was wiped off the map for 150 years. Independence returned in 1918 in the wake of the First World War. The hero of the day was Marshal Pilsudski, whose stature here is akin to Churchill's in England. Technically November 11th is a national holiday, but most cafes and restaurants will remain open in Zakopane. when - 11th November where - Across Poland more info - click here |
