JAZZ CAMPING 2009

Jazz has a surprisingly long tradition in the highlands. From the fifties, jazz was seen as a kind of protest against the Communist tyranny. Twelve years ago, some jazz enthusiasts decided to give the tradition a boost, and they set up this cracker of a festival. Veterans of Poland's jazz scene will join up and coming stars at the beautifully located prewar Gorski Hotel in Kalatowki. Well worth checking out.

EXHIBITION: THE TIME OF THE TATRA EXPLORERS

This exhibition was created to chime in with the 120th anniversary of the Tatra museum. It takes us back to the time when exploring the mountains was a true adventure - Zakopane was not much more than a remote hamlet 120 years ago. Soon it became the spiritual capital of the nation, as artists, poets and intellectuals convened from all parts of the then divided country. Here, photographs, paintings and mementos recall that golden age.

EXHIBITION: INFINITY, BEYOND DREAMS - THE SOURCE OF MOUNTAIN PHOTOGRAPHY

This small but delightful exhibition is being hosted in the lovely old Willa Koliba, seat of the Museum of the Zakopane Style. Twenty-two photographs on loan from the Museo Nazionale della Montagna in Turin take us back to the very dawn of mountain photography. You'll be able to savour pictures by pioneers of the genre, such as the legendary Bisson brothers, famed here in Poland for being the only snappers of national icon Fryderyk Chopin.
